BOOM LOGISTICS RELIES ON ENZED’S SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND EMERGENCY SERVICE
In the short and long term hire industry scheduled and preventative maintenance strategies play critical roles in being able to supply customers what they need, when they need it – which is particularly important when your customers are working to contracted completion dates.
Andy Hudson is the Workshop Manager for one of Australia's leading ‘lift-and-shift' hire companies, Boom Logistics Group, which is a one-stop-shop for both the short and long term hire of lifting and access services, rigging services and heavy haulage right across Australia.
BACKGROUND
Due to the incredibly diverse range of job sites and projects Boom Logistics are involved in on a daily basis the company has developed a wide set of problem solving
skills, as well as an ability to produce innovative and time saving lifting solutions to meet the needs of Australia’s leading mining and construction companies.
Maintenance plays a critical role in the fleet's availability so Boom Logistics has their own team of mechanics, fitters and boilermakers on hand for each shift, but when it come to hydraulic, fuel, air and commercial hoses and fittings they rely on ENZED to keep them moving.
Operating over 600 pick and carry and all terrain cranes ranging in size from 12 tonnes through to 350 tonnes from 53 centres around Australia, Boom Logistics tackles some of Australia's most challenging lifting and transport assignments on a daily basis with the aid of ENZED's on time, anytime guarantee.
Based in the Brisbane suburb of Pinkenba, Andy is responsible for the maintenance and service availability of over 40 cranes, a 400 tonne jacking system, 25 semi, drop-deck and extendable low loader trailers, 15 dolly trailers, 15 steerable jinker trailers, plus a fleet of heavy rigid trucks and prime movers.
According to Andy, Boom Logistics is raising the standards in lifting and safety and to be successful in the contract lifting industry you've got to be on the top of your game – every time, so Boom Logistics invests heavily in the latest equipment and keeps their fleet in top working order with regular preventative and scheduled maintenance programmes.
"Because of the incredibly diverse range of job sites and projects we are involved in on a daily basis, Boom Logistics has developed a wide set of problem solving skills, as well as an ability to produce innovative and time saving lifting solutions that sees us looking after the needs of Australia's leading mining and construction companies.
"Because of high capital cost of our bigger equipment most hires are on a short term basis which means we have to schedule availability effectively to ensure our client's get what they want, when they need it. "Maintenance plays a critical role in the fleet's availability so we have our own team of mechanics, fitters and boilermakers on hand for each shift, but when it come to hydraulic, fuel, air and commercial hoses and fittings we rely on ENZED to keep us moving.
"We have to manage our fleet fairly tightly to meet our customers needs as often the lifting or shifting service we provide is allocated specific time windows which means there is no room in the schedule for lengthy delays caused by a failure. "So in the event of a breakdown rapid response is the only acceptable solution
for us, ENZED know this and are always there when we need them, whether it's a local, remote or interstate call out. "Brisbane is currently in the middle of
some massive infrastructure projects that includes the second Gateway Bridge, the Hornibrook Bridge between Sandgate and Redcliffe and the multibillion dollar Airport Link project and we are involved in all of them.
"The new Gateway Bridge for example has been a massive exercise for us, from transporting the large concrete beams used in its construction onto site with our specialist fleet of steerable trailers and then lifting them into position with the two tower cranes we've got on site.
"With contracted completion dates the construction companies involved are all under pressure and that tight construction timetable flows all the way through to us, so it's essential that our equipment is available when needed.
"This is where the support of an organisation like ENZED really makes a difference as they understand our position and work with us to do whatever is required to keep our equipment operating, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"We have a dedicated ENZED HOSE DOCTOR from the Brisbane Central ENZED Service Centre and he's been looking after the hose and fitting needs, parts supply and emergency breakdown repairs of the various companies that have evolved into the Boom Logistics Group here in Brisbane for almost 30 years, which really says something about his customer first approach to business.
"The ENZED team know that if something does go wrong we need a solution yesterday and our HOSE DOCTOR has the ability to track down a part or find the right solution no matter how odd-ball the request might be.
"The beauty of ENZED is that they are not just a supplier of hoses and fittings, they are a supplier of advice and solutions. Our dedicated HOSE DOCTOR works closely with the workshop team and is always willing to share his extensive knowledge and recommend economical engineering solutions.
"Recently we had an instance where we had a job on Stradbroke Island that involved the crane travelling on sand to access the job which meant the operator would have to deflate the tyres and then re-inflate them to get the job done and then do the same to get back.
"We threw the challenge over to ENZED who engineered a fool proof system that involved tapping into the crane's compressed air tank and installing a fitting and air hose that enabled the operator to let the tyres up and down quickly and easily.
"Wear and tear on our equipment's hoses and fittings is not as savage as in some industries, but when a hose does blow you can always bet that it will be at the most inconvenient time – so it has to be fixed fast and this is where ENZED never lets us down. "I can strongly recommend you give ENZED a go if you're not using them. Their service is exceptional, theirParker Hannifin hoses and fittings used are top quality, plus they've got a service network around the country
that keeps us in business no matter where we are," Andy said.
